New Year’s Getaway: Catskills, NY

Most people I know can relate to the desire for a post-holiday recovery session. After a week of Parisian indulgence surrounded by friends, family, and food (which ended with 2-days of food sickness), I was ready for some alone time with Pierre.

I first learned about Scribner’s Lodge through Gilt City. Gilt City happens to be another mindless indulgence of mine followed by the likes of Net-A-Porter, the Outnet, Pinterst Fashion & Recipes, and when desperate, the original, Groupon. While my mother continues to practice mindfulness, I continue to practice mindlessness every night while brushing my teeth. Occasionally, I stumble upon a deal.

After digging around the net, Scribner’s seemed like the perfect getaway – isolation, good food at their well-reviewed restaurant Prospect. We booked our round trip bus tickets for Hunter, NY.

We definitely got isolation, perhaps a bit too much for our liking. The hotel bar and acclaimed restaurant are closed Mon-Wed. Options within walking distance are sparse, albeit they do exist. For lunch, we ended up going to the local Chinese restaurant ordering the safe “steamed veg” dish. If you’re looking for a more “chic for Hunter” experience, I would recommend Van Winkle’s at the Kaatskill Mountain Lodge. Plenty of options exist in the neighboring town of Tannersville; get there by car or Smiley’s Taxi service.

Perhaps the best part of our trip was the bad weather. Despite the rain and melting snow we ended up having a great time on the slopes with our makeshift Sled. Leave it up to Pierre and a canteen tray.
